The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team is set after a week of preparation for the upcoming Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division I National Championship that will take place in Greenville, S.C. from May 13-18.
GCU enters the championships as the No. 13 seed and will face No. 4 seed Brigham Young on May 13 at 1:30 p.m. (Arizona time). This will be the second meeting this season between the two, with BYU winning 13-12 on March 14 in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Antelopes are in their second season of MCLA play, moving to D-I at the conclusion of the 2012 season. The MCLA serves a national organization of non-NCAA, college lacrosse programs. The MCLA currently operates in the US and Canada with 200-plus teams in two divisions, across ten conferences.
The championships will feature many of the traditional D-I FBS schools, including Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State and Stanford from the Pac-12; Michigan State and Purdue form the Big Ten; as well as Boston College, Georgia and Texas. Colorado State, the defending champion, earned the No. 1 seed.
GCU went 8-5 in a season that produced highlight wins over Arizona and Arizona State.
“We told our guys to believe and play together and stay with the plan for 60 minutes each game and good things would happen,” said head coach Manny Rapkin earlier this week. “We did just that and good things have happened.”
The Antelopes are led by
Carson Barton, who is second in the MCLA with a 6.0 points per game average. He has 50 goals this season, seventh-best in the nation. Barton has also tallied 28 assists.
Dean Fairall has averaged 4.5 points per game, tallying 24 goals and 12 assists.
“We are looking forward to getting another opportunity to play a great program like BYU,” added Rapkin. “We had a spirited battle with them in Phoenix and we are confident heading into this week’s matchup.”
GCU played in the MCLA D-II Championships in Greenville last season, advancing to the Quarterfinals after defeating Savannah College of Art and Design, 6-5 in double OT, during the opening round. The Antelopes announced their move to MCLA D-I after the tournament.
