The Grand Canyon University lacrosse team earned the No. 13 seed in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division I National Championship. The Antelopes will open with No. 4 Brigham Young on May 13 at 1:30 p.m. (Arizona time). The tournament will be contested in Greenville, S.C.
“We told our guys to believe and play together and stay with the plan for 60 minutes each game and good things would happen,” said head coach Manny Rapkin. “We did just that and good things have happened.”
Grand Canyon, in its first season in MCLA Division I, finished with an 8-5 record and advanced to the SLC semifinals where they fell in overtime to UC Santa Barbara on Friday. The Antelopes currently hold down the No. 12 ranking in the latest national poll, while BYU is at No. 5.
The Cougars defeated the ‘Lopes, 13-12, on March 14 at GCU.
“We are looking forward to getting another opportunity to play a great program like BYU,” added Rapkin. “We had a spirited battle with them in Phoenix and we are confident heading into this week’s matchup.”
The Antelopes are led by Carson Barton who is second in the MCLA with a 6.0 points per game average. He has 50 goals this season, seventh-best in the nation. Barton has also tallied 28 assists.
Dean Fairall has averaged 4.5 points per game, tallying 24 goals and 12 assists.
GCU played in the D-II MCLA Championships in Greenville last season, advancing to the Quarterfinals after defeating Savannah College of Art and Design, 6-5 in double OT, during the opening round. The Antelopes announced their move to MCLA D-I after the tournament.
