Grand Canyon heads to Reno, Nevada, this week to compete in the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships from Thursday to Saturday. After dominating in the WAC, the Lopes look to break ground with a championship in their new conference.
Â
"I am very excited for our inaugural Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships." GCU head coach Tom Flood said. "We are confident in both of our teams' ability to have very successful meets this year."
Â
The meets events are set to start at 10 a.m. on Thursday and run until around 6 p.m.
Â
On Friday, the events go from 11:30 a.m. to 6:10 p.m. and then Saturday starts at 9:30 a.m. and wraps up around 2:15 p.m.
Â
The Lopes look to feed off their strong indoor season competitors, including senior
Taliyah Booker after her multiple school records in the 400-meter run for the Lopes.
Â
GCU graduate
Alyssa Blockburger also will look to make headlines as she has had a strong indoor season with multiple program records.
Â
"Both our teams are very well balanced with good depth in most event areas, especially the 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 60-meter hurdles, jumps and multis," Flood said.
Â
Pole vault will be making headlines for the Lopes as well this weekend with the junior duo of
Tatum Moku and
Eva Lowder coming off a dominant indoor season.
Â
Lowder has broken the school record four times this season in her first year with the Lopes while Moku has been a part of two of those.
Â
The men's team, ranked as high as first in the West Region this season, brings firepower with former Mountain West Freshman of the Week
Ty Johnston and 800-meter record holder senior
Germain Lemaitre.
Â
As always, the Lopes will be ready to compete and look forward to the new challenge that the Mountain West brings.
Â
"Everyone here is ready to leave it all out on the track and fight until the last event to keep our winning track and field tradition alive," Flood said. "Both teams know that no one is going to just hand them anything and that they are going to have to fight for every point they get."
