Wrapping up a packed three-dual homestand, Grand Canyon kept its undefeated home record alive Sunday by nearly sweeping UC San Diego in a decisive 6-1 win at GCU Tennis Facility.
In doubles play, the Lopes (11-1) came out ready following their big Saturday victory against Boise State.
GCU's ranked sophomore duo of
Tristan Berard and
Andreas Loizas got back to winning ways by only needing about 20 minutes to defeat Andrew Beceiro and Prathinav Chunduru 6-1.
The doubles point was clinched for the Lopes by junior
Brice Patoux and sophomore
Daniel Jankoski, who won 6-3 to extend their streak as a duo to three matches.
Going into singles play, GCU started out hot, winning the first set on almost every single court.
Berard had his most dominant showing of the year against the Tritons, winning 6-1, 6-0.
On Court 4, Lopes sophomore
Diordan Macababbad got back to his winning ways with a decisive first-set victory of 6-1 before wrapping up with a comeback 6-4 final set.
Jankoski, who has only lost one match of his last nine, got the deciding point for the Lopes on Court 3. He defeated Trevor Nguyen of UC San Diego 6-4 in the first set before winning 7-6 in a tiebreaker in the second set.
With the win clinched, the Lopes and Tritons played out the rest of the matches with Loizas winning 7-6, 6-2 while junior teammate
Charlie Pade clinched his match 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
GCU has a couple days off before going up against UC Riverside at home on Wednesday.
