Match comes down to final court for 3rd time this season

Grand Canyon fell 4-3 to DePaul on the final court in Sunday's matchup at GCU Tennis Facility.

GCU (3-2) was back on its home court looking to get back to its winning ways Sunday against the Blue Demons (4-4). After a win against Northern Arizona and a loss at Arizona State on Friday, DePaul looked to leave on a positive note on its last stop in the desert.

In doubles, the Lopes seniors Jonathan Da Silva and Pablo Rosati dropped their first match of the season against DePaul's Thomas Giles and Pablo Torres Almeida. The Lopes took Court 1 (7-5), but the Blue Demons returned the favor by capturing the doubles point win at Court 2 with a 7-6 for the 1-0 dual lead.

The Lopes gained back a point early in singles matches with a victory on Court 3 from Matteo Lugari. The graduate won 6-4, 6-1 over the Blue Demons' Tobias Leitner. The Lopes then tied the match at 2-2 with a victory from Da Silva on Court 5.

After DePaul took Courts 2 and 3, Rosati came back from a 5-4, third-set deficit to take his Court 6 match to tie the team dual at 3-3 with Court 1 still playing.

Court 1 went three sets when sophomore Nikita Volonski bounced back from a first-set tiebreaker loss with a 6-3 win in the second set. A tight 7-5 third set went to DePaul's Matteo Iaquinto and dropped Volonski to 3-1 on Court 1 in his first season at GCU.

The Lopes are back at GCU Tennis Facility at 2 p.m. Friday for a match with Montana State.
