FLAGSTAFF, Arizona — Grand Canyon ended the regular-season portion of its indoor schedule by sending a small group to the Northern Arizona Tune-up at the Walkup Skydome.
With one week to go before the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Spokane, Washington, only about 30 athletes trekked north for the meet.
The condensed participant list yielded five marks that sit in the WAC's top-10 performances for the indoor season:
- Senior sprinter JoJo Harding ran a season-best time of 6.68 seconds to win the 60-meter run final, matching his personal best set last February and rising to the No. 4 mark in the WAC.
- Freshman sprinter Luca Cannizzo clocked a 48.37 in the 400 meters, recording his personal best and moving into the WAC's top 10 in the event.
- Senior middle distance runner Michael Cunningham also snuck into the conference's top 10 with a 1:53.76 in the 800 meters.
- Senior thrower McKenna Hayes added 17 centimeters to her season-high shot put mark with her 12.82-meter showing ranking sixth in the conference.
- Graudate thrower Andrew Wells raised his season-best weight throw mark to 16.01 meters to enter the WAC's top 10.
Although it is the GCU women's squad that is looking to defend its title at the WAC Championships next week, it's the men's team that has the confidence of the conference's head coaches in the pre-championship poll.
GCU's men were picked to win the championship with Utah Valley and UT Arlington on their heels.
On the women's side, the Lopes were tabbed for second place behind Utah Valley and ahead of Tarleton State.
The two-day championship meet begins on Friday, Feb. 28 and concludes on Saturday, March 1.
