FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Grand Canyon participated in its first meet of 2025 at the Friday Night Axe 'Em Open with the majority of the team making its season debut at Northern Arizona's Walkup Skydome.
For the 30 or so student-athletes who began the season in Spokane on Dec. 14, it was a chance to get back to competition. For the remainder of the squad, it was the first meet of a new season.
"Overall, I am very pleased with our performances," Lopes head coach Tom Flood said. "We definitely busted off some rust in our first meet of the new year."
GCU brought more than 90 athletes to the first of four meets in Flagstaff.
Kansas transfer and senior hurdler
Cam Wilmington turned in a good two-event performance with a mark of 7.90 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to finish second and a 300-meter hurdles time of 33.88 seconds.
On the women's side, senior sprinter
Aaliyah Rifort-Delem turned in a similarly impressive performance in the same distances (7.44 in the 60, 39.26 in the 300).
"I thought that
Cam Wilmington had a good opener in both the 60-meter hurdles and 300 meters," Flood said. "I also thought that
Aaliyah Rifort-Delem had a nice double in the 60-meter dash with a conference-leading time and in the 300 meters."
A pair of Lopes jumpers stood out in sophomore
Megan Williams and senior
Misael Colon. In the high jump, Williams cleared the bar at 1.67 meters. In the pole vault, Colon cleared his third and final attempt at 5.0 meters.
"
Megan Williams had a great opening meet in the high jump," Flood noted. "It was also really nice to finally see
Misael Colon clear the 5-meter mark in the pole vault."
A number of Lopes won events, including a men's and women's sweep of the 800 by freshman
Rayan Belkheir and graduate
Niki Hemmerlin, sophomore high jumper
Osita Gift Agbo and a long jump sweep by senior
Justice Fair and junior
Maliyah Ross.
GCU will send athletes back to Flagstaff on Friday for the Lumberjack Team Challenge.
"We will get back to work again on Monday and look to get even better next at NAU," Flood said.
