ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Grand Canyon women's golf team began its first season under head coach
Brent Nicoson with two strong opening rounds Monday at the Dick McGuire Invitational.
The Lopes started the season with an 8-over-par day that puts them one stroke back of second place entering the final round at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
Graduate transfer
Calynne Rosholt and sophomore
Brenna Preap led the way for GCU by tying for seventh place after Monday's first rounds. That helped put the Lopes in fourth place in the 15-team field with Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton just a stroke ahead of them at 7 over. UNLV leads the tournament after playing even Monday.
GCU held second place after the first round, when the Lopes shot 1 over with Rosholt and Preap each shooting 1-under rounds of 71.
Rosholt, a transfer from Arizona State, made her Lopes debut with string of four birdies over a six-hole stretch of the first round. She landed at 1 under for the day after starting the second round with 3-under play through the first 11 holes.
Preap, who played in one tournament as a freshman, used her strong summer momentum to start the season well Monday. She finished each round with a birdie on the par-5, 508-yard 14th hole.
Rosholt and Preap are five strokes behind leader Lauren Gomez of Pepperdine, who is 6 under on the strength of a 5-under first round.
GCU senior
Alyzzah Vakasiuola, a Mesa Community Colllege transfer, also made a strong Lopes debut Monday with rounds of 1-over 73 and 3-over 75 to tie for 23rd place at 4 over par. Like Preap, Vakasiuola also finished each round with a 14th-hole birdie.
Senior
Anci Dy's Lopes debut began with an even-par 72 to be tied for 13th after the first round. She slipped to a tie for 34th with a second-round 78. Sophomore
Jess Haines opened her GCU career with birdies on two of her first three holes and shot rounds of 75 and 83 to tie for 70th.
The tournament's final round will have a Tuesday shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. (Phoenix time).
