TUCSON, Ariz.. — The Grand Canyon track and field team had an impressive ending to the regular season at the Desert Heat Classic with two school records and a stacked race victory.
GCU freshman
Sophia Saldutto broke her own school record in the javelin with a mark of 45.15 meters. The mark stands as the 20th best in the West region.
Daviciea McCartney tied an 11-year-old Lopes record in the 110-meter hurdles when he went 13.89 seconds. McCartney already holds the 400-meter hurdles school record, along with the 60-meter hurdles school record on the indoor side.
"It was a good, final, regular-season meet today in Tucson, with very cool weather for this time of year in Arizona," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said.
One of the most exciting moments of the meet came during
Joanna Archer's 800 meter race. The GCU graduate student won the race in 2 minutes, 4.15 seconds. Archer's victory is just off the school record and came against some of the best teams in the nation with runners from Iowa, Minnesota, Tennessee, New Mexico all following her across the finish line.
Lopes graduate
Jorden Okyere recorded a personal best in the hammer throw with a mark of 64.04 meters. This sits second in the WAC with teammate
Israel Oloyede holding the top spot.
"We have positioned ourselves to make a lot of noise at the WAC Outdoor Championships in a couple weeks on both the men's and women's sides," Flood said. "We will let the dust and final results settle from this weekend's meets and then eventually have to make the always difficult decisions on who makes our conference rosters."
GCU will have an off-weekend next week before heading to the WAC Championships, which will be hosted by Utah Valley at the Hal Wing Track & Field Stadium in Orem, Utah from Thursday, May 9, through Saturday, May 11.
