SEDONA, Arizona – Coming off a first-place outing at the Women's Jackrabbit Invitational in Nevada, the Grand Canyon women's golf team is in prime position to capture its second straight victory following day one of the Red Rocks Invitational at the Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona.
GCU is tied for fourth place at 10 over par, three strokes back from overall leader Cal State Fullerton. The Lopes completed round one in the early afternoon and nearly finished round two before darkness halted play. Round two will continue tomorrow morning, followed by the third and final 18 holes of the tournament.
The Lopes are tied with Weber State in the fourth-place spot, and trail only Illinois State and Seattle U in second at 8 over in addition to Cal State Fullerton.
Seniors
Becca Tschetter and
Carly Strole paced the Lopes early with a one under first round, with eight birdies combined between the two including five from Tschetter. Both are tied for 13th overall at 1-over par, as Tschetter has one hole left in her second round to Strole's two.
Junior
Leighton Shosted and sophomore
Ryan Flynn are tied for 32nd at 5-over par. Both golfers have five birdies to their name so far, as Flynn had four in the first round and Shosted four in her second before play stopped. Senior
Constanza Guerrero is tied for 67th at 10-over with five birdies in total, while sophomore
Amelia Curtis is also tied with Guerrero in the individualist spot for the Lopes.
GCU seeks its fifth team title of the season and third this spring. Last year's squad totaled six top-3 finishes, and a top-3 finish after the conclusion of tomorrow's final round would mark seven this season with three tournaments left on the schedule.
