For their last regular-season competition, Grand Canyon track and field will go back to New Mexico on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque.
"We are sending a small group of athletes to Albuquerque this weekend," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "The group includes several athletes that are just trying to stay in rhythm for next week's conference championships and several more athletes that are on the bubble to make the conference roster and are looking to move up in the conference descending order list."
Some GCU athletes will take the weekend to rest for the WAC Championships while other Lopes will get have more competition to prepare.
"The majority of our superstars are staying home to train and rest up, so we can make a lot of noise at the indoor WAC Championships with both of our teams," Flood said.Â
GCU's travel team will include the first-, second-, and third-place pole vaulters in the WAC with
Eric Cabais-Fernandez Jack Hodge, and
Grant Hagaman, respectively. Cabais-Fernandez is coming off winning his second WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week award.
Alyssa Walls,
Hannah Blood,
Jack Schaumberg and
Adam Raska are among the GCU athletes returning to competition after traveling to the Riverfront Invitational and Multis last week.
The field action will begin at 10 a.m. with races starting at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
