Two Grand Canyon swimmers, a future Lopes diver and the GCU head coach represented the program and university well this month at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
GCU'sÂ
Maria Brunlehner represented Kenya while Lopes juniorÂ
Atu Ambala competed for Uganda. Meanwhile, GCU head coachÂ
Steve Schaffer coached Kenya.Â
Brunlehner set the Kenyan national record in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.12 seconds. The mixed freestyle 4x100-meter relay then set another national record with a time of 3 minutes 42.28 seconds, in which the junior swam as the anchor leg.
Coached by Schaffer, the duo is continuing its run after Schaeffer also coached Brunlehner at the World Championships last summer in Japan.Â
Ambala swam the 5,000 for Uganda. He first represented his country on the national level seven years ago in the Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Egypt.
Future Lopes diver Omar Elsayed, who signed with GCU in November 2023, competed for Egypt in the 10-meter diving competition, where he placed 33rd.
Â
The Lopes have continued to have a unique amount of international athletes in the swimming and diving program that create a family atmosphere while being so far from home.
