STOCKTON, Calif. – While a quest for a three-peat at the Visit Stockton Invitational fell short, the Grand Canyon men's golf team tied for second-best score of Wednesday's third round and saw four of its five golfers shoot even or under par as the Lopes claimed fourth out of 15 spots.
GCU totaled an 18-under scorecard, three shots back of third-place California and nine shots up on fifth-place Washington State. San Diego won the tournament at 32 under, followed by host Pacific at 28 under.
The Lopes were one of three teams to shoot 8 under or better in Wednesday's final round. GCU recorded 62 birdies in the tournament to tie for the second most among the field with host school Pacific. Of the Lopes' birdies over the course of three days, 23 were tallied Wednesday with sophomore
Gavin O'Neill leading the way with six, including five over his final nine holes.
O'Neill tied for fifth overall at 8 under and closed out his day with arguably the best round of his collegiate career. After starting the day at 2 over through five holes, the Dublin, Ireland, native went 6 under over the final 13 holes to finish the day at 4 under par.
Two shots back of him was GCU freshman
Matthew Diehl, who carded a 3-under final round with four birdies. He opened his day at 2 under through the first six holes and finished the back nine with eight pars and a birdie on the par-5 16th hole.
GCU graduate
Tommaso Zorzetto finished 4 under and tied for 16th, recording a 1-under final round with five birdies to his name. Three Lopes placed in the top 20 as GCU earned its third consecutive top-five finish.
Lopes senior
Kiko Coelho tied for 33rd with an even scorecard, registering five birdies over his last 18 holes. GCU freshman
Nixon Lauritzen tied for 78th at 11 over. Lppes junior
Antonio Bulgheroni competed as an individual and tied for 27th with a 2-under total, notching five birdies and an eagle Wednesday.
GCU takes two weeks off before concluding the fall season Oct. 28 at the Preserve Golf Club Intercollegiate in Carmel Valley, California.
