The Grand Canyon track and field team has a split schedule, with half of the team competing in New Mexico on Saturday and the other half competing at Northern Arizona on Friday.
The Lopes are sending the sprinters and some multi-event athletes to the UNM Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational to compete against the likes of Texas, UCLA, Arizona and many others on Saturday in Albuquerque.
The other half of the multi-event athletes, along with the throwers, will head back to NAU for the Lumberjack Team Challenge on Friday.
Daviciea McCartney and
Jack Hodge will look to make a difference on the men's side after strong performances last week. McCartney, a senior, went 7.92 seconds in the men's 60-meter hurdles for the top time in the WAC. Hodge had the best performance in the WAC thus far with a high jump of 5.05 meters.
On the women's side, senior
Joanna Archer had the best 600 time in the conference with a mark of 1 minute, 32.62 seconds. Meanwhile, on the field side of events,
Taryn Burkett had a top conference triple jump mark of 12.12 meters.
All four will head to New Mexico while throwers
Alyssa Walls and
Oscar Rodriguez will look for wins in Flagstaff. Walls, a senior, threw a distance of 17.56 meters at the NAU Axe 'Em Open.
Saturday's meet will mark the first of four trips to Albuquerque this season for the Lopes.
