The Grand Canyon women's tennis team kicked off the fall season in Flagstaff at the Lumberjack Classic over the weekend.

The Lopes competed against host Northern Arizona, New Mexico and Tulsa in a three-day hidden dual format that featured singles and doubles play at the NAU Tennis Center. Returners
Dania Deaifi and
Valentina Del Marco, along with newcomers
Iva Sepa and
Valeriia Krokhotina, competed for the Lopes.

In Day 1, the Lopes competed against NAU in doubles and New Mexico in singles. Deaifi had the first of two singles wins on the weekend, defeating Maud Vandepute 6-1, 0-6, 6-2. Sepa battled in a three-set match against Katherine Jhang, losing 5-7, 7-5, 7-6. Meanwhile, in doubles, the Lopes dropped a pair of matches to the Lumberjacks.

The second day was more of the same for Deaifi as she picked up a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Tulsa's Ana Martinez. Sepa had another close three-set loss while Del Marco lost 4-6, 1-6. In doubles GCU freshmen Sepa and Krokhotina teamed up in a close 6-3 loss while Del Marco and Deaifi lost 6-2 to New Mexico.

The Lopes were involved in just two matches on the final day as Deaifi lost in straight sets to NAU's Dolavee Tumthong before teaming up with Sepa in a close 7-5 loss to a pair from Tulsa.

GCU will be back in action at the SDSU Fall Classic in San Diego from Friday to Sunday.
