The Grand Canyon track and field team is bringing its largest group to the NCAA West First Round in program history.
The Lopes will have 17 athletes competing in the regional competition at Sacramento State.
The GCU men will participate in the 200- and 400-meter races, the 400- and 1,600-meter relays, pole vault, triple jump and discus and javelin throws.
The women will compete in the 100 hurdles, 800 run, long jump, triple jump and hammer throw.
GCU's
Erin Brown and
Kyle De Moica will kick off the track action Wednesday in the 200 and 400, along with
Marten Gasparini and
Walter Moffett in javelin and
Eric Cabais-Fernandez in pole vault.
De Moica comes into the competition as one of the most decorated Lopes. Starting as a walk-on, the Fontana, California, native has built quite a resume. De Moica is a two-time WAC individual champion, a two-time WAC relay champion, a five-time WAC indoor champion, a three-time WAC outdoor champion and a four-time GCU record holder. Â
Brown is a Sam Houston transfer who let his feet do the talking at the WAC Outdoor Championships, and is ready to make some noise in Sacramento. Brown comes into regionals after setting two school records and winning the 400 at conference.
Gasparini heads to regionals ranked eighth in javelin in the West with a mark of 71.99 meters, and Moffett is coming off being the conference runner-up in javelin.
Cabais-Fernandez, a junior, cleared a season-best mark of 5.19 meters at the conference meet to take second in the pole vault.
GCU head coach
Tom Flood has continued to produce strong talent to be a 23-time WAC Coach of the Year.
The men's competition will take place Wednesday and finals will be Friday, while the women's competition will be Thursday with finals being Saturday.
