The Grand Canyon track and field team will compete Thursday through Saturday at Stephen F. Austin for the chance at more hardware.
The Lopes have won eight WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships titles with the men entering this week as two-time defending champions.
"We are very excited and confident in our teams' ability to have a very successful WAC Outdoor Championships meet again this year," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said.
Â
According to the WAC Championships' coaches poll, the men are predicted to win a third outdoor championship in a row.
"Our men's team is again very well balanced and we will look to a great group of upperclassmen for leadership and for some very talented newcomers to make a lot of noise," Flood said.
Â
The women are predicted to place third according to the coaches poll, but that does not mean they won't makes some noise of their own.
Â
"Our women's team will be missing some very talented athletes due to red-shirting this outdoor season, but everyone is ready to leave it all out on the track and field and fight until the last event," Flood said.
Â
The Lopes will have their veteran talent to rely on with the likes of
Adam Knuff,
Bryson Benjamin,
Kyle De Moica,
Keira Christie-Galloway, and
Aidan Diggs, but also have plenty of young talent ready to perform on the big stage.
Â
"The WAC, with the additions of the Texas schools and Southern Utah, is a very strong track and field conference," Flood said. "Both of our teams know that no one is going to hand them anything and that they are going to have to fight for every point they get."
Â
The 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be broadcast live on ESPN+ starting at 2:30 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Thursday, May 11 and Friday, May 12. Coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13.
Â
"We will have to battle in every single event to the best of our abilities and let the officials keep track of the team scores," Flood said.
