ARLINGTON, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team advanced to the WAC Tournament semifinals with a 4-0 sweep over New Mexico State on Thursday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center.
The Lopes (7-13) took control of the match early by taking the doubles point and rode that momentum into singles to close out the shutout win.
"One thing I was most impressed about was how our freshmen handled the pressure of what a tournament feels like," head coach
Derek Siddiqui said. "There's a different feel, different atmosphere and I thought our freshman, especially at No. 1 doubles, the way they started it off was very impressive."
The Lopes held the early advantage by taking the doubles point with wins on the top and bottom courts. Junior
Wyatt Anderson and sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva put the Lopes up early with a 6-1 win at court three but New Mexico State (3-18) countered with a 6-3 win at court two. In the big moment, GCU freshmen duo
William Alsterback and
David Wekesa stepped up at the No. 1 court and won 6-4 to put GCU up 1-0.
In singles the Lopes jumped ahead early one with a quartet of first set wins up and down the lineup. Another GCU freshman stepped up with
Paolo Rosati winning at court five in straight sets after not playing in doubles to start the day.
With the 2-0 lead in hand the Lopes turned to their top two singles courts to close out the match. Da Silva finished his match at 6-1, 6-4 at court one and sophomore
Martim Marujo won a close set 7-5 but was lights out in the second winning 6-0 at court two to clinch the win.
The Lopes will now turn their attention to No. 2 Abilene Christian in the semifinals on Friday. The Wilcats earned a first-round bye and will face the Lopes for the second time this season after winning 5-2 in the regular season.
"You see it on the tour all the time when a guy comes through qualifying and gets a few wins under his belt before the main draw and builds some momentum," Siddiqui said. "That's the same way we feel here. With this match under our belt we feel like we played some good tennis which is an advantage towards us."
The Lopes and Wildcats will start at 10 a.m. Phoenix time from the Arlington Tennis Center on Friday.
