Since the spring campaign started for the Grand Canyon women's golf team, the Lopes have placed in the top-3 in each of its five events played dating back to February 6, with the five straight top-3 placements setting a new GCU D1 era record. They look to extend that streak ahead of the WAC Championship in the three-day Chattanooga Classic at Council Fire Golf Club beginning Sunday morning.
GCU took third place in both the Valley Invitational and GCU Invitational, won the Jackrabbit Invitational in Boulder City, Nev., placed second at the Red Rocks Invitational and recently tied for second in the Fresno State Classic Mar. 28. The Lopes are hitting their stride at the right time, with only the Chattanooga Classic and Bobcat Classic (April 9-11) left before the conference championship in Blaine, Wash., April 23-25.
The Lopes enter the tournament ranked No. 98 in the most recent Golfstat rankings, two spots up from where it was a week ago. Among the 18-team field, 10 others join GCU in the top-100, including No. 28 SMU, No. 57 South Florida, No. 58 Minnesota, No. 63 Augusta, No. 70 Old Dominion, No. 75 Yale, No. 76 Xavier, No. 79 Colorado State, No. 93 UTSA and No. 94 Notre Dame.
Of the five players competing for the Lopes include junior
Constanza Guerrero, freshman
Ryan Flynn, senior
Carmen Belmonte, junior
Carly Strole and junior
Becca Tschetter. Flynn recently placed fourth in the Fresno State Classic while Guerrero and Strole each placed in the top-15 as GCU was the only team in the 15-team field to have three players in the top-15 of the leaderboard. Junior
Lani Luafalealo will also compete as an individual for the Lopes.
Play begins Sunday morning at 9 a.m. EST/6 A.M. MST, with rounds two and three starting at the same time Monday and Tuesday.
