CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team concluded the Chattanooga Classic on a strong note, carding a 3-under-par scorecard to finish in eighth place out of 18 teams at 21 over for the tournament.
The three-day competition took place at the par-72, 6,209-yard Council Fire Golf Club over the span of Sunday through Tuesday. No. 28 SMU won the tournament as the only team to shoot under par at 14 under par. Xavier placed second at 6 over par with Augusta in third at 9 over par. The Lopes' final-round score of -3 was fifth lowest among the field.
GCU tied for seventh in total pars with 168 and finished middle of the pack in total birdies with 34. The Lopes' 18 birdies on Tuesday was a team best for a single round in the tournament.
Freshman
Ryan Flynn finished best on the Lopes at 3 over par in a tie for 18th place. She shot 1 under par Tuesday with three birdies, as she shot 75/73/71 for the week. Junior
Constanza Guerrero placed one shot back of Flynn at 4 over (tied for 20th), mirroring Flynn's Tuesday score of 1 under with three birdies.
GCU junior
Becca Tschetter finished tied for 36th at 8 over, followed by junior
Carly Strole (65th at 15 over par) and senior
Carmen Belmonte (tied 66th at 17 over par). Belmonte was one of six players to shoot a sub-70 scorecard Tuesday, tallying a 68 with seven birdies, the most of any Lope in a single round for the week. Belmonte jumped 20 spots from her Monday finish and ended her Tuesday round by playing 7 under over her final 12 holes.
Junior
Lani Luafalealo also competed for the Lopes and tied with Belmonte at 17 over par as an individual.
GCU snapped a streak of five straight top-three tournament finishes, which set the record for most in a row and tied the record for most in a single season in the Division I era (since 2013-14). The Lopes have finished in the top 10 in nine of 10 tournaments this season and have placed in the top five in six of them.
The Lopes have one final tournament before the WAC Championship as it partakes in the Bobcat Desert Classic at the Golf Club of Goodyear (Ariz.) from Sunday to next Tuesday.
Day 2 recap
With temperatures in the low 50s and light rain early in Day 2 of the Chattanooga Classic at Council Fire Golf Club, the Grand Canyon women's golf team gained ground Monday with a second-round team score of 7 over par and sits in eighth place heading into the final round of play Tuesday.
GCU's 7-over round was eighth best in a field of 18 teams, as its team score of 24 over par also ranks eighth for the tournament. No. 28 SMU leads the field at 3 under par, as it shot the only under-par scorecard Monday. Augusta is in second place at 8 over par with Xavier in third at 10 over par.
Flynn leads the Lopes in a tie for 20th place as she carded a 1-over-par scorecard Monday. Flynn shot 3 over in Sunday's first round, and much like her first 18 holes, regrouped after a double bogey on hole 13 (her fourth hole of the day) with two birdies and 11 pars over her final 15 holes. She enters the final day at 4 over for the tournament.
Constanza Guerrero and Tschetter are one stroke back of Flynn at 5 over par overall. Tschetter carded the best second-round score for the Lopes at even par, tallying four birdies as she jumped 16 spots into the top 30. Guerrero also jumped double-digit spots, moving up 10 spots with a 1-over second round. Guerrero also had four birdies, including three on the back nine of play.
Strole, is tied for 54th at 10 over and Belmonte is tied for 86th at 21 over. Luafalealo shot 2 over on Monday and is 13 overall (tied for 71st) as an individual. The Lopes are fifth in the field for pars (112) and are in the middle of the pack in par-5 scoring (5.26 per hole), with only two teams in the field averaging 5.0 or less on such holes.
The final round of play begins Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. (Phoenix time). The Lopes look to gain more ground with its top-three placement streak sitting at five straight tournaments. While the Lopes are 14 strokes back of third-place Xavier, they recently gained 16 strokes between the first two rounds of the Red Rocks Invitational to place second overall.
Day 1 recap
The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed Day 1 of the Chattanooga Classic at 17 over par, putting them in ninth place among 18 teams on Sunday.
The Lopes teed off at 9 a.m. (Eastern time) with weather in the low 40s and finished the 18 holes with the weather warming to the low 70s as GCU recorded a score of 305. SMU leads the field at even par, with Notre Dame in second at 5 over par and Minnesota and Augusta tied for third at 8 over.
Flynn leads the squad at 3 over par and is tied for 24th with two rounds to play. While Flynn started 2 over through her first three holes, she maintained par-level play and shot 1 over through her final 15 holes for the 3-over scorecard. Guerrero is one shot back at 4 over par and is in a tie for 36th.
Strole and Tschetter shot 5 over (tied for 42nd) while Belmonte is tied for 83rd at 11 over. Luafalealo is also tied at 83rd as an individual.
GCU tallied five birdies and led the field with 57 pars. It also had the third-best par-5 scoring average at 5.12.
The Lopes look to gain ground over the next two days, with 18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday. GCU has placed in the top three in each of its past five tournaments, tied for the most all-time for a season in the school's Division I era.
Second-round play begins Monday at 6 a.m. (Phoenix time).
