The Grand Canyon track and field team begun their outdoor season Friday and Saturday at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix.
"Overall I thought we had a good first outdoor meet," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "With less than ideal conditions for our sprinters and jumpers (chilly evening temperatures and slight head winds), we got a lot accomplished and had some very outstanding early season times/marks."
The day begun with the javelin events.
Marten Gasparini took two throws, one to get into the finals, and one to win the finals.
"I thought our men javelin throwers had some impressive early marks," Flood said.
Just as she left off in the indoor season,
Keira Christie-Galloway began the outdoor season cruising.
"I was particularly impressed with Keira's school record performance in the 100 meter hurdles," Flood said.
The Arizona State transfer had a time of 13.34 seconds.
"I'm thrilled that our men's 4x100m relay, with way less than perfect exchanges, they had a very fast early season time of 39.66," Flood said.
The relay squad was made up of
Adam Knuff,
Erin Brown,
Jacob Holguin, and
Kyle De Moica.
"Brown finished a very good day with an excellent time of 21.07 in the 200m," Flood said.
On the women's team,
Therese Olshanski had two top five all time GCU performances in both the 1,500m and 5,000m.
"I was also impressed with
Oscar Rodriguez excellent double in the hammer throw and discus," Flood said.
Rodriguez threw 52.90 and 52.74m over the weekend.
"I was totally thrilled to see little
Mia Corners' have a career day with an awesome quadruple performance, Flood said. "She started the day with a GCU top ten performance in the long jump (5.78m), a personal best in the 200m, and running two wonderful legs on both of our relays."
"We will really get back to work now that spring break is over and get even better this next weekend in Tucson," Flood said.
