LIHUE, KAUA'I, Hawaii – The Grand Canyon men's golf team concluded play in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Friday, finishing 12th place out of 21 teams with a team score of 13 under par at the Oceans Course Hokuala in Lihue, Kaua'i.
The three-day tournament was condensed to two with forecasted weather effecting play Saturday. The Lopes finished with an even scorecard in the third and final round, just three strokes back of a top-10 finish.
BYU won the tournament at -54, followed by No. 19 Arizona at -36 and No. 9 Texas A&M -32.
Senior
Matthew Braley tied for 10th place with a tournament total of -10. Braley started the tournament Thursday morning +5 through six holes and surged back to -3 at the conclusion of the day. Braley registered a -5 scorecard in the third round that included six birdies and totaled 16 birdies for the tournament, 12 in the second and third rounds combined.
Fifth year
Parker Reddig placed T-38th at -3. Reddig shot a +1 over the final 18 holes and tallied 14 birdies for the tournament. Rounding out the field for the Lopes was junior Tomasso Zorzetto (T-84th/+3), junior
Nicky Kling (T-84th/+3) and junior
Craig Passmore (T-93rd/+4). Zorzetto shot +1 in the third round, while Kling and Passmore carded a +4 and +3, respectively.
The Lopes fielded two individualists in sophomores
Josh McCabe and
Sam Murphy. Both finished -2 for the tournament, with McCabe tallying a -3 third round and Murphy a -2.
GCU next hosts the GCU Invitational at the GCU Golf Course Mar. 13-14.
Day 1 Recap
The Grand Canyon men's golf team opened the spring season in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on the Oceans Course at Hokuala on Thursday, carding a team score of 7 under par to tie for eight place out of 21 teams.
The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes, with rounds on Friday and Saturday. Due to inclement weather in the Lihue, Kaua'i, area, the second round began Thursday and will resume Friday =at 11:30 a.m. (Phoenix time).
GCU ended the first round in a tie for 12th place before it jumped four spots to tie for eighth with Santa Clara when second-round play stopped. BYU leads the tournament at 23 under par, followed by No. 19 Arizona in second at 22 under and New Mexico in third at 14 under.
Leading the Lopes is Reddig, who is tied for 14th at 5 under par. Reddig shot 5 under in the first round to be just one of 10 players in the 126-player field that shot 67 or less in the opening round. Reddig is even par in the second round, looking to capitalize on his seven birdies in the first round.
Behind him for the Lopes is Braley, who is tied for 22nd at 3 under. Braley bounced back from a rough start, as he opened the first seven holes at 5 over before going 5 under in the final 11 holes, highlighted by an eagle on No. 2. Since his bogey on hole No. 16 – his sixth hole played of the day – Braley has only bogeyed once and has registered seven birdies or better for the tournament.
Passmore ended his day on a high note, recording four birdies over his 10 holes in the second round to jump 48 spots and tied for 62nd at 1 over. Kling is tied for 82nd at 3 over, while Zorzetto is 4 over and tied for 92nd. Kling has five birdies while Zorzetto has three so far in the tournament.
GCU fielded two individual entries in McCabe and Murphy. McCabe is 2 under after going 3 under for his first nine holes of the second round while Murphy is 3 over with an even-par first nine holes to his second round. Like Braley, McCabe tallied an eagle, shooting a 3 on the par-5 fourth hole. Murphy had seven birdies Thursday with two in his last four holes played.
Barring weather, the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will continue second-round play Friday with the third round to be completed Saturday.
