The Grand Canyon swimming and diving team is in Oxford, Ohio, to compete in the 30th annual Miami Midseason Invitational beginning Thursday and ending Saturday alongside six other teams.
Last year at the same event, the Lopes placed first in the men's competition and second in the women's. The success included two NCAA B cuts, three team records, four NCAA Zone diving cuts and 119 career-best times.
Â
The team has many new faces since a year ago, yet the expectation Is still the same — swim fast and dive well.
Â
The midseason race is a great opportunity because the athletes taper leading into the meet, meaning every athlete has been resting leading up to this. In addition, they will all wear tech suits, which guarantee faster swimming. The ultimate goal is to have NCAA and CSCAA qualifying times.
Â
The Lopes' last meet took place on Nov. 3 at Air Force.
Â
The Miami Midseason Invitational is held at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center, which is highlighted by an eight-lane, 50-meter pool and a separate 25-meter dive well with 1- and 3-meter springboards and  1-, 5- 7.5- and 10-meter platforms.
Â
Each day will have two portions, preliminaries in the morning (7 a.m. Phoenix time), followed by finals in the evening (3 p.m.). Relays and the 1,650-yard freestyle will be conducted as timed finals. In all other events, the top 24 swimmers from preliminaries will advance to finals, where a bonus "C" heat, consolation "B" heat and championship "A" final heat will be contested. Only the A and B finals will be scored, according to the championship scoring format.
