The Grand Canyon swimming team is sending eight student-athletes to the first-ever MPSF Open Water Championships in Long Beach, California, on Saturday.
On the men's side, GCU's
Atu Ambala,
Alex Volkov,
Vitaly Kostin, and
Joe Stephenson will compete in the 5-kilometer race at 9 a.m. Following that, the women's 5K will kick off at 10:30 a.m. The Lopes women will include
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska,
Krisalyn Henderson,
Maria Chatzi, and
Bryn McGinnis.
In a historic first for the conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) is set to host the single-day Open Water Swimming Championship at Marine Stadium in Long Beach. GCU associate head coach
Chris O'Linger sits on the coaches board for the first-time event as a former collegiate swimmer.
The action will continue in the afternoon with the men's and women's 2,000-meter relay events at 1:45 p.m and 2:15 p.m. Relay teams will be comprise of four competitors, swimming 500 meters each.
The team scoring for the collegiate events will be based on performance in both the 5K and relay events. The top three individual swimmers and the top relay team from each institution will contribute to their teams' scores. Additionally, the top three collegiate swimmers in the men's and women's 5K races will secure automatic qualification for the 5K USA Swimming Open Water National Championship, as well as the CSCAA National Championship in December.
During the brief interlude between the collegiate 5K and relay events, a Masters 5K and 1K race will be held for adults aged 18 and over, commencing at noon. GCU head coach
Steve Schaffer will be suiting up in the 1K competition.
