Grand Canyon track and field has a split team schedule this weekend with half of the team competing at New Mexico while the other half will be back at Northern Arizona.
The Lopes will send top sprinters and hurdlers as well as some distance runners and multi-sport athletes to compete with Georgia, Texas and other top teams at the New Mexico MLK Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.Â
The Lopes throwers, pole vaulters and the other half of the distance runners and jumpers will compete at the NAU Lumberjack Team Challenge on Friday in Flagstaff.
GCU's
Keira Christie-Galloway,
Brooke Weimer and
Aiden Montigny all will try to build on great recent performances. Galloway beat the school record in the 60-meter hurdles. In the long jump, Weimer had a length of 5.89 meters, which was first in the WAC by over a foot. Montigny had a long jump of 7.10 meters to win the event.
The MLK Collegiate Invitational will be a test run of sorts because the NCAA Indoor Championships will take place at the Albquerque facility.
The Lumberjack Team Challenge will include the Lopes'
Jorden Okyere, who had a weight throw of 20.21 meters last week to rank first in the WAC this season by over 6 feet.
Â
In addition, the Lopes went first and second in the women's weight throw with
Samaria McDonald and
Alyssa Walls.
