The Grand Canyon track and field team's outdoor season rolls on, and the Lopes are in Tempe, Arizona, for the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State this weekend.
For GCU head coach and Arizona State track and field alumnus
Tom Flood, it's another chance to take his team back to his old stomping grounds.
"We are excited to be competing back at ASU this year after a nine-year absence," Flood said. "As a former Sun Devil track and field athlete, I'm thrilled to have my GCU team competing at the Sun Angel Classic. It's been one of the top collegiate meets in the country for decades."
In addition to the Lopes, this year's meet field includes Arizona State, Brown, BYU, Iowa State, Northern Arizona, Kansas, UCLA, UTEP and San Diego State.
The heptathlon began on Thursday, but the event gets underway in full force on Friday and concludes late on Saturday.
"Our athletes will be competing against some of the country's top teams," Flood said. "We anticipate, with the quality of athletes in this meet, that we will we have a lot of outstanding times and marks, several more school records broken and hopefully several more top regional performances."
GCU is competing in Tempe for the second time this season, with one more meet remaining at Arizona State later this month. Prior to this year, the Lopes had not participated in a meet at ASU since 2012 despite being scheduled to compete in the Sun Angel Classic in the canceled 2020 season.
