The Grand Canyon men's tennis team earned its second WAC weekly honor of the season with freshman
Martim Marujo being named WAC Men's Singles Player of the Week on Wednesday.
In a thrilling 4-3 comeback win against UC Riverside on Sunday, Marujo's 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 singles win was the deciding match in a back-and-forth battle between the Lopes and Highlanders.
Â
After GCU fell behind 2-0, it began a comeback with four of the final five singles matches.
Stanislas De Samucewicz and
Loic Van Zeggelaar won in straight sets at the bottom two courts while
Mariano Argote's three-set win at No. 2 gave the Lopes their first lead at 3-2.
Â
After UC Riverside countered with a three-set win at No. 3, it set the stage for Marujo's heroics. After dropping his first set, the Santarem, Portugal native battled back from a first-set loss in a tiebreaker and won the final two sets. After the final point, Marujo was mobbed by his teammates in the Lopes' first road win of the season.
Â
Marujo and the Lopes will be back in action next weekend in Las Cruces, New Mexico, for the start of WAC play against Lamar on March 19 and New Mexico State on March 20.
