Lopes set to host GCU Invitational

The Grand Canyon men's golf team hosts the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course in Phoenix on Monday and Tuesday. The invitational will have three rounds with the first of two rounds on Monday starting at 7:45 a.m.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

HOME TOURNAMENT: The Lopes are back in action after having a week off as they host their only home tournament of the year.
EIGHT PLAYING: The Lopes team will be combined of Matteo Cristoni, Sam Murphy, Matthew Braley, Nicky Kling and Craig Passmore. Three other Lopes will be playing as individuals in the Invitational, being Zac Owens, Jacob Lackey and Johannes Hounsgaard.
23-TEAMS: The Lopes welcome 23 schools to Phoenix, including WAC members California Baptist and Abilene Christian. A total of 120 players will take the course.

GCU INVITATIONAL
The tournament field includes TCU, Hawai'i, North Dakota State, Southen Mississippi, Sacramento State, Valparaiso, Pacific, Drake, UT Arlington, Creighton, Omaha, Columbia, California Baptist, Abilen Christian, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Northern Colorado, Fresno State, Kansas City, Incarnate Word and Cal State Fullerton. The 54-hole tournament will take place over two days with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. The course will be a par 72 on both days, but the yardage will go from 7,148 on Monday to 7,202 on Tuesday.

LAST TIME OUT
GCU played in the Desert Mountain Collegiate on Desert Mountain Club's Outlaw Course in Scottsdale. The 16-team tournament was hosted by Michigan and included two top-50 teams in UAB (37) and Mississippi State (48).

Cristoni, a freshman, was the Lopes' top scorer in the 54-hole tournament at 2 over par and a tie for 11th. Cristoni finished with three birdies in the final round. Kling, a sophomore, was the only other Lope to finish in the top 20, as he shot 6 over par to tie for 20th. Kling scored 3 over par in the second and third rounds.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Lopes head to Oregon on March 21–22 for the Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club.
