The Grand Canyon track and field team enters its final weekend of regular-season competition for the indoor season, with the squad splitting to compete in meets at Washington State (WSU Invitational) and Northern Arizona (Ron Mann Classic).
With the WAC Indoor Championships looming in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in two weeks, this weekend marks the final pre-championships chance at indoor competition for the Lopes. The GCU men's team enters the Friday-Saturday meets as the No. 19 indoor team in the nation.
"We will continue to look for outstanding performances that will help us solidify our conference teams," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "We are thrilled to be traveling to Spokane to compete in the WSU Invitational at a brand-new venue called The Podium."
Two years of construction wrapped on Spokane's new veune, The Podium, when the facility opened in November. It will be the site of this year's USA Track & Field Indoor National Championships and will also host the 2023 WAC Indoor Championships.
"Both
Aidan Diggs and
Jorg Vanlierde will compete in the heptathlon, starting on Wednesday," Flood said. "We will use this two-day meet to replicate our conference championships in two weeks."
Back in the Grand Canyon State, a few student-athletes will return to Flagstaff. It will be the third time this season that GCU will have a presence at Northern Arizona's Walkup Skydome.
"We will be sending a small contingent of athletes to NAU," Flood said. "It will be mostly throwers, and we look for continued improvements in all event areas."
Early events at WSU were underway as of Wednesday, while events from Flagstaff begin at noon Friday.
