The Grand Canyon men's golf team heads to Hawai'i for its first spring invitational. GCU will compete in the 45th John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course Hokuala. The invitational will be a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes on each day and shotgun starts beginning at 11:30 a.m. (Phoenix time).
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- FIVE LOPES PLUS ONE: Five Lopes will travel to compete in the invitational. The group includes freshmen Matteo Cristoni, sophomores Sam Murphy and Craig Passmore, graduate student Zac Owens and junior Matthew Braley.
- 6 POWER FIVES: The Lopes will take on six Power 5 schools in the 18-team tournament, which includes Arizona, California, Texas A&M, USC, Utah and Washington State.
- FIRST SPRING TOURNAMENT: The Lopes finish their spring schedule in Hawai'i after closing out the fall season in Hawai'i. Â
HOAKALEI CC INVITATIONAL
The tournament field includes host Hawai'i, Arizona, BYU, California, Fresno State, Long Beach State, New Mexico, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UNLV, USC, Utah, UTEP and Washington State. All 18 teams will take on a par-72, 7,156-yard course with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) for Thursday's 18 holes of play. Play will continue with tee times starting at 11:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) on Friday and Saturday.Â

LAST TIME OUTÂ
GCU finished tied for fourth place with WAC opponent Utah Valley in October at the Hoakelei CC Invitational. The Lopes finished at 9 over par with three player cracking the top 25 and two more in the top 45. Cristoni jumped 11 spots in the final round, shooting 2 under par with five birdies. Cristoni ended the invitational at even and tied for 12th place. Owens struggled in his final round in Hawai'i but managed to tie for 16th at 3 over par. Moving up four spots and producing his best round of the invitational was Braley, who shot 1 over par in his final round. He finished at 5 over par, placing him 24th after 54 holes.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Lopes will return to action on March 5-6 when they play in the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan at Desert Mountain Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona.
