Grand Canyon's swimming teams participated in UNLV's First Chance Meet on Saturday in Las Vegas for a final evaluation opportunity before the team heads to WAC Championships.
No team scores were kept with the Lopes competing in eight events against UNLV, Dixie State and Northern Arizona.
On the men's side, GCU sophomore
Jack Armstrong won the 100-yard butterfly after posting a lifetime-best time of 47.59 seconds. The Manvel, Texas, native also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.38 and placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.81.
Lopes freshman
Sam Jennings also earned a lifetime best in the 100 butterfly after posting a time of 49.59 seconds. The Houston, Texas native, added a season best in the 200 individual medley at 1:51.13.
GCU junior
A.J. Sheppard had a great performance in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:31.71.
Briana Rittenbach, also a Lopes junior, competed solo this weekend on the women's side. She earned a win in the 200 freestyle with a lifetime best of 1:52.29. The Bismarck, North Dakota, native also won the 50 freestyle in a season-best 23.80.
The WAC Championships will be held Feb. 23-26 in Houston.
