HOUSTON — The Grand Canyon men's swimming and diving team is in fifth place with 57 points after Day 1 of the four-day WAC Championships on Wednesday at CRWM Natatorium.
Diving started the day in the 3-meter event, where GCU sophomore
Isaac Poole made the final cut with a score of 273.25 points. In the finals, Poole posted a score of 302.65 points to take sixth place.
"Isaac had a good group of dives in the men's final," Lopes head coach
Hunter Shafer said. "He finished a respectable sixth in a very deep men's event."
GCU sophomore duo
Nicholas Gunn and
Reece Robles competed in the consolation finals, where Gunn finished first with a total of 286.10 points.
"Nick won with a great list," Shafer said.
An early lead appeared to be what the Lopes had hoped for, but a false start in the 200-yard medley relay became a disqualification for the squad.
But GCU rallied together to cheer on the 800 freestyle relay made up of juniors
Mikhail Lyubavskiy and Grffin Mckean and seniors
Samuel McKenzie and
Florent Janin. They swam a 6:30.95 for the third-place podium finish.
"The men swam well, but the DQ on the medley relay put us in a bit of a hole," Lopes head coach
Steve Schaffer said. "We will have to start working on climbing out of that tomorrow. With as fast as we are swimming, we should be able to do that."
The Lopes look to get back on track Thursday. Preliminary competition starting at 9:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) and finals set to begin at 5 p.m. (Phoenix time) every day this week.
Preliminaries will be livestreamed on wacsports.com/watch with finals set to air on ESPN+.
