Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming and diving carried its high-level performance of the previous weekend into dual victories against Arizona Christian and Ottawa at home Saturday.
It was an eventful day at Fr Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center in Phoenix, the Lopes won every event that they entered and set six pool records with one of those being a school record. The Lopes men defeated Arizona Christian 134-58 and downed Ottawa 134-53. The women swept the day as well, wtih a 134-12 win against Ottawa and a 134-93 victory against Arizona Christian.
On the men's side, GCU graduate
Adrian Curbelo set a new pool record with a time of 50.25 seconds in the 100-yard individual medley. The previous pool record was set in 2018 with a time of 50.83.
Junior
Harper Houk set a new pool record in the 200 breaststroke. The Knoxville, Tennessee, native beat the previous record by more than a second, touching the wall with a time of 1:58.49.
For the GCU women's team, junior
Raphaela Nakashima won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.62 time. This win also beat the previous pool record from 2019.
Graduate
Emily Muteti beat her 100 butterfly pool record of 54.19 with a new time of 54.07.
Freshman teammate
Paula Martinez Moreno, who is from Madrid, Spain, now owns the Fr Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center record for the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:00.61.
Saturday's sixth pool record came from the impressive effort of
Maria Chatzi in the 100 individual medley. The sophomore from Loannina, Greece, obliterated the previous record by almost four seconds. The new record now sits at 55.90, which was a pool record and a GCU record.
The Lopes' next competition will consist of a select group of swimmers traveling for the CSCAA National Open Water Championship 5K in Miami on Dec. 18.
