Select members of the Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming team are heading to Miami to compete on Sunday in the CSCAA Open Water Championship.Â
With the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America event limiting each side to five competitors, the Lopes men will be represented by sophomore
Vitaly Kostin, junior
A.J. Sheppard, senior
Ian Shultz, senior
Griffin McKean and sophomore
Wyatt Dickman.
The women's team will include sophomore
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska, freshman
Bryn McGinnis, freshman
Krisalyn Henderson, graduate
Emily Muteti and sophomore
Maria Chatzi.
The race will occur in Biscayne Bay at Florida International, where both teams will participate in a 5,000-kilometer course. The top three athletes' times of each team will determine the team score.Â
Previously, the Lopes competed in a 1-mile open water competition, but this is the first time in program history that GCU has participated in a 5KÂ open water swimming competition.
The men's race will start at 6:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) and the women will begin at 8 a.m.
