GCU opens the WAC Tournament versus No. 3 seed Seattle U on the campus of California Baptist on Wednesday. Kickoff is for 5 p.m. (Phoenix time) on ESPN+.
AT A GLANCE
- The Lopes begin the WAC Tournament on Wednesday in Riverside, California, on the campus of California Baptist as the No. 6 seed against No. 3 seed Seattle U.
- It is the third straight year that GCU has made the WAC Tournament, with the last two times resulting in trips to the championship match.
- GCU won 4-1 at Seattle U on Oct. 28. This week marks the third straight WAC Tournament that the Lopes have faced the Redhawks. GCU defeated them 2-0 in the semifinals in 2020 and tied 2-2 in the final last year before falling 4-3 in penalty kicks.
- The Lopes earned five all-conference awards, including WAC Offensive Player of the Year for senior Shaun Joash. The forward from England has 11 goals, six assists and 28 points and is tied for ninth nationally for goals scored.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU fell 2-0 to Air Force at home Saturday in the final regular-season game of the season.
- The Lopes played without Joash, an All-WAC first-team honoree, and All-WAC second-team selection Innocent Jibril Rodet and sophomore defender Clayton Duarte in that contest. All three are expected to suit up against the Redhawks on Wednesday.
- The Lopes finished with a 4-3-2 conference record, highlighted by a 4-1-2 October to propel them into the WAC Tournament.
JOASH NAMED WAC OFFENSIVE POY
- Joash was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year by a vote of conference coaches on Tuesday. He is the second GCU player to be named Offensive Player of the Year (Niki Jackson, 2016) and is the second straight player to earn a Player of the Year award after Esai Easley received Defensive Player of the Year last season.
- Joash ranks among the best in the country on the offensive side, as he ranks third in points per game (1.87), sixth in total points (28), ninth in goals (11) and third in points per game (0.73). He is one assist away from setting the GCU Division I-era record for assists in a season at seven.
- His play stepped up against WAC competition, totaling 19 points with eight goals and three assists against league teams. He has scored eight goals in his last six games and tallied three assists in that stretch.
OFFENSE STEPPED UP IN WAC PLAY
- The Lopes offense has doubled its scoring output since conference play started, scoring 16 goals with 11 in its last five games. Of GCU's 26 assists this season, 17 have come in conference play with freshman Bright Nutornutsi having four and Shaun Joash distributing three.
- Since starting WAC play 0-1-1, the Lopes rattled off four wins in a six-game span with a tie and a loss from Oct. 7 to Oct. 30. Heading into the Seattle U match on Oct. 28, Seattle, San Jose State and Air Force were the WAC's top three teams. The Lopes defeated Seattle U 4-1 and San Jose State 1-0 to clinch a spot in the WAC Tournament.
SCOUTING SEATTLE U
- The Redhawks enter with a 6-9-1 overall record after a 5-4 conference mark that earned them the No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament.
