With the completion of GCU Stadium for the Grand Canyon men's and women's soccer programs, the Lopes ushered in a new era of GCU soccer as they began calling one of the country's top collegiate soccer stadiums1 home on Friday, Aug. 26, 2016.
GCU Stadium is a modern facility which features seating capacity for more than 6,000 spectators and includes an academic wing underneath the stadium. At 41,852 square feet, the stadium provides 3,000 shaded individual chairback seats and is located in the heart of GCU's campus, just east of Antelope Gym and steps away from the Student Union.
The all-natural turf is surrounded by a 10-foot grass berm on three sides to house 3,000 spectators. Students and alumni enjoy an exclusive tailgating area on a 2,100-square-foot raised, concrete platform on the east side for extra seating that houses the raucous, nationally-recognized Havocs student section. In addition to the pitch, the complex includes a spacious indoor facility that features team locker rooms and a satellite training room. Fans also have access to a Lopes team store and a concession stand.
The facility also accommodates the GCU Student-Athlete Academic Center. The wing serves as the epicenter for academic support which includes an expansive academic tutoring center for student-athletes. The multipurpose facility also provides two full-sized educational classrooms.
Housed atop the grandstand at midfield, the press box provides ample amounts of room and amenities to accommodate working press and broadcast media. Individual booths provide noise and space barriers for all working media.
GCU Stadium hosted its first competitive match on Aug. 26, 2016, as the men's soccer team took on Central Florida. In front of 6,402 fans — the largest crowd to ever see a collegiate soccer game in Arizona — the Lopes topped the Knights 4-2 to christen the stadium.
GCU Stadium's constant flow of outside visitors not only includes elite college programs such as Creighton, Akron and Washington, but also includes national and professional teams for both matches and practices. The pitch has been the temporary home of both the United States and Mexican men's national teams while preparing for local competition in the area. On the men's side, GCU has also faced off against Phoenix Rising FC, OKC Energy, Sporting KC, and the Portland Timbers in spring exhibitions.
In its first season, GCU Stadium averaged 2,508 fans per match for men's soccer, a mark which ranked No. 7 nationally.
