RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Seattle U in the WAC Tournament first round on Wednesday evening at California Baptist.
With the loss, GCU ends the season at 7-8-3 overall and a 4-3-2 conference record.
GCU's lone shot of the first half came early in the match, as sophomore midfielder
Innocent Jibril Rodet put one on net but was blocked away from the goalkeeper toward the near sideline. Seattle U found the game's first goal in the 32nd minute and led by the same at halftime.
The Lopes registered two corner kicks while sophomore goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt made two saves through 45 minutes of play.
GCU found the equalizer in the 62nd minute as a foul was called inside the box for a penalty kick. Senior forward
Shaun Joash took the PK and converted, tying the match at 1-1. The goal was Joash's 12th of the season and seventh in his last five games played. He is tied for sixth nationally in goals.
Minutes later, the Redhawks regained the lead in the 66th minute to go up 2-1. The Lopes tried to find the equalizer in the remaining 24 minutes of play but couldn't find the back of the net.
GCU finished with nine shots, including eight in the second half, and four corners for the game. Joash ends the season with 12 goals and 30 points, ranking second for a single season in the GCU Division I era in both categories.
