GCU entered Friday's matchup looking to extend its seven-match winning streak against a UNLV side that had yet to lose at home this season. The Rebels presented another challenging road test for the conference-leading Lopes, who have not lost since Sept.16.
The opening half was tightly contested, with both teams battling for possession and struggling to generate clear scoring opportunities. Physical play set the tone early as frequent fouls interrupted the rhythm of the match, and neither side was able to break through for nearly all of the half.
GCU held UNLV scoreless until the Rebels capitalized on a late opportunity when Nick Legendre converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute for a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Despite the late setback, the Lopes responded in the second half.
GCU found its breakthrough in the 58th minute when Lopez leveled the match at 1-1, scoring a goal for the fourth consecutive match. The equalizer gave the Lopes new life, and a physical battle continued as both sides searched for a go-ahead goal.
UNLV regained the advantage in the 82nd minute with a goal by Manolo Vasquez, leaving the Lopes trailing 2-1 with little time remaining.
GCU, however, was not finished. Hanni delivered the equalizer in the 88th minute, converting a penalty kick to bring the match level at 2-2 and preserve GCU's unbeaten conference record.
The Lopes return to the road on Wednesday for another Mountain West matchup at San José State.
