GCU tie clinches MW Tourney home field advantage, win captures at least share of regular season title
AT A GLANCE
- Entering with an eight match unbeaten streak with three games left in the 2026 regular season, the Lopes travel to San José State for the second of two straight matchups against a top three team in the Mountain West.Â
- Sitting in first with 19 points, multiple scenarios can occur following Wednesday night's matchup against the Spartans. A GCU tie clinches a home match in the Mountain West semifinal Nov. 10. A win does the same plus secures at least a share of the Mountain West regular season title, while a win and a UNLV loss gives GCU the outright number one seed and sole possession of the MW regular season crown.
- The Lopes have outscored their opponents 16-6 in conference play. They have scored at least two goals in each league matchup, while allowing two goals once over seven matches.Â
- Senior captain Jorge Lopez is playing the best soccer of his four year GCU career in October, scoring in four straight contests while ranking sixth in the nation in total assists with eight. Lopez is now second in the conference in total points (16) and won MW Offensive POTW for the second straight week and third time this year on Oct. 26.
- With 12 shots against UNLV on Oct. 23, GCU's double digit shot streak extended to 15 matches. The squad ranks sixth nationally in shots on goal per game (7.7) and seventh in shots per game (17.0).
- GCU has tallied 34 assists, a MW best and 17th nationally. Lopez, Joao Gonçalinho and Rafael Coet have combined for 19 of the 34 assists (55%).
- Beltran Fernandez has 17 saves, two shutouts and six wins in league play. With 72 shots faced, he has allowed just six goals for a .739 save percentage in conference play.
- A credit to its attacking front, the Lopes rank 33rd in the country and first in the MW in corner kicks per game (5.8).
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU drew with UNLV, 2-2, in Las Vegas Oct. 23.
- While not winning the match for the first time since Sept. 16, its eight match unbeaten streak stays alive with three games to go in the regular season. The Lopes are 7-0-1 over their last eight contests
- Lopez scored for the fourth straight game, while senior Sabri Hanni converted a PK to tie the match up with less than three minutes to spare.
SCOUTING SAN JOSÉ STATE
- The Spartans are 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-2 in Mountain West play, currently on a four match unbeaten streak of their own.Â
- They have won three of their last four, their last loss being to GCU on Oct. 4 in Phoenix.Â
- SJSU is third in the Mountain West standings with 12 points, one back of second place UNLV. Those two teams have split in their two games against each other this season.Â
- The Spartans are 4-1-2 at home this season, its only loss to No. 1 Stanford back on Sept. 4.
- Goalkeeper Ronin Axelson is 12th in the nation in saves with 64, owning a .744 save percentage with 4.3 saves per game, second best in the conference.Â
- GCU's 34 assists are most in the MW, followed by SJSU, who has 29. Cameron Cook currently has five assists, tied for third with Coet in the conference leaderboards.Â
- GCU has the best goal differential in the conference at 11, while the Spartans' is -1. SJSU has outscored its opponents 8-3 over its last four games.Â
WHAT'S NEXT?Â
- The Lopes head home for one final regular season matchup at GCU Stadium Sunday, Nov. 1 for senior night against UC Davis.Â
