ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Arnau Camaño scores and
Beltran Fernandez saves a PK story has been written already this year. And yet a new chapter in that book was written Wednesday evening at Greater Zion Stadium as the freshman forward scored twice while the fifth-year keeper saved an early penalty kick to help aid Grand Canyon to a 3-1 victory at Utah Tech.
News and Notes
-Camaño tallied his second brace of the season, moving his goal total to seven, which ranks tied for eighth nationally and leads the Mountain West. He has scored in three straight games including four of his last five.
-Fernandez stopped an early penalty kick in the fourth minute; his second straight PK stop after a last-minute diving effort against CSUN Sept. 20. He finished the evening with three saves.
-Known for his assist making, freshman João Gonçalinho scored his first collegiate goal in the first half, aided by freshman
Rafael Coet and senior
Jorge Lopez. Coet had two assists on the night, while Lopez now has 16 for his career.
Utah Tech (1-6-2, 0-1-1) was coming off back-to-back ties and had an early chance to take the lead against GCU, who is in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings with six points.
Fernandez and a Utah Tech forward both made attempts at the ball, with Fernandez called for a push in the back in the ensuing tackle. But with no hesitation, the Spaniard made a diving stop to his right for his second penalty kick save of the season.
GCU totaled 21 shots on the evening, 14 of which came in the first half. After multiple attempts to find a goal, the Portugal native Gonçalinho calm and collectively sent a right foot strike on net. From just outside the box, the midfielder aimed inside the right post and found his spot to give the Lopes a 1-0 lead.
The Lopez/Coet duo was at it again, linking up with an assist on a goal for the second straight contest.
Six minutes after Gonçalinho's goal, Camaño netted his first via header off a deflection. Coet was inches away from a goal of his own, but his shot hit just under the cross bar and bounced hard onto the turf field. As the ball skied into the air, Camaño settled under it and headed it left side of the goal for the score.
GCU took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
As both teams totaled seven shots a piece in the second half, Camaño netted his second goal in the 72nd minute. A backward pass toward the Trailblazer goalkeeper was just slow enough for Camaño to put a last second touch on it and sneak it past the keeper into the far-right corner.
Utah Tech broke the shutout in the 84th minute, this time converting a penalty kick.
GCU returns home and hosts San José State Sunday, October 4 at 7 p.m. It is a rematch of last year's WAC Championship title game in which GCU won 2-1 to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
