Lopes aim for 3-0 Mountain West start to remain in 1st place

Winners of three straight matches, including the first two in Mountain West play, Grand Canyon returns home to host San José State at 7 p.m. Sunday.
GCU has outscored its opposition 7-3 in its past three wins, beginning the season 2-0 in conference play for sole possession of first place with six points.
Freshman forward Arnau Camaño has scored in three consecutive games and four of his past five, tallying a brace last time out in the 3-1 win at Utah Tech. Camaño leads the Mountain West and is 10th in the nation in goals (seven) and holds a .714 shot accuracy percentage, fourth best in the country.
Senior midfielder Jorge Lopez registered another assist in GCU's 3-1 win over Utah Tech, giving him seven on the season. He leads all Mountain West players and is fourth in the country in that category, with his latest assist breaking the single-season record for assists in the program's Division I era.
The Lopes average 18.8 shots per game, third most in the nation with a 7.9 shot-on-goal average. They reached double-digit shot totals in every game this season and have 27 shots on goal over their past three games.
The shot attempts produce corner kicks opportunities, with GCU ranking 16th in the nation at 6.7 per game.
GCU is first in the conference in goals, assists, points, goals per game and assists per contest.
LAST TIME OUT
GCU defeated Utah Tech 3-1 in a road match Wednesday in St. George.
Camaño scored twice, while freshman Joao Gonçalinho scored his first collegiate goal in the first half.
Ffith-year goalkeeper Beltran Fernandez stopped his second penalty kick of the season in the fourth minute of action, setting up Camaño's first goal four minutes later.
SCOUTING SAN JOSÉ STATE
The Spartans are 3-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in Mountain West play. They are 0-1-2 over their last three games, including a tie at home versus UC Davis.
San José State went 2-2 against common GCU nonconference opponents this season, defeating both CSU Northridge and Sacramento State.
The team has totaled 17 assists this season, second most in the conference behind GCU. They have scored 12 goals in 10 games.
Ronin Axelson is 37th in the nation and second in the MW in saves per game (4.2), totaling 42 on the year to rank 13th nationally.
Two of the conference's top shot takers are squaring off Sunday, with Daniel Fergoso Bautista (.400) ranked second in the MW in shot accuracy.
Fergoso Bautista is tied with Goncalinho and freshman Rafael Coet for second in the league in total assists with four.
