Duo combined for 1 goal, 2 assists in GCU’s MW-opening win
With a record-breaking performance from one Grand Canyon player and another game-winning goal from the other, senior Jorge Lopez and freshman Felix Oberwaditzer garnered Mountain West weekly awards Monday.
The record-breaking night belonged to Lopez, who notched MW Offensive Player of the Week honors. He set the program's Division-I era record for career assists, addding two in GCU's 2-1 home win over UNLV on Saturday night.
Lopez, the captain from Bakersfield, California, began the night tied with Marco Alfonso at 13 and ended with 15, now five back from fifth place in GCU's all-time record book.
Lopez's six assists this season rank in the top 10 nationally and are tied for most assists in a single season in the program's D-I era.
Oberwaditzer mimicked last week's CSU Northridge victory with a game-winning header, notching MW Defensive Player of the Week and MW Freshman of the Week accolades.
The defensemen from Liechtenstein played all 90 minutes and has won back-to-back Freshman of the Week honors.
