Lopes open conference play against RPI No. 49 Rebels
AT A GLANCE
- For the first time in program history, Grand Canyon men's soccer will compete in a Mountain West match Saturday when UNLV visits GCU Stadium. The Lopes were men's soccer members of the WAC from 2013-25 prior to the Mountain West adding sponsorship of the sport in the summer of 2026.
- GCU ended nonconference play with a 2-1 victory at CSU Northridge on Sept. 20. Trailing 1-0 in the first half, GCU scored two unanswered second-half goals via Arnau Camaño and Felix Oberwaditzer. Fifth-year goalkeeper Beltran Fernandez made a penalty kick save in the 86th minute to keep the match at 2-1.
- Senior midifielder Jorge Lopez notched his 13th career assist in the win over CSUN. He is tied for first all-time in the program's Division I era for career assists with Marco Alfonso (2017-21). He is seven back from Kevin Campbell (1988-91) for fifth in the all-time record book.
- The Lopes rank seventh in the nation for shots per game (fifth, 18.8) and shots on goal per game (seventh 8.0). GCU has double-digit shot totals in every match this season with three double-digit tallies for shots on goal, including Sunday at CSUN (12).
- Lopez and freshman midfielder João Gonçalinho are ranked first and third, respectively, in the Mountain West for assists. Lopez has four to Gonçalinho's three after each player tallied an assist last game.
- Through three starts in goal, freshman AJ Mather-Nash has 11 saves and is coming off a career-best five stops at CSUN. Nine of his 11 saves have come over the last two matches.
- The Lopes have garnered a weekly award three straight times, most recently when Oberwaditzer was named MW Offensive and Freshman of the Week on Sept. 21.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU came from behind and scored two unanswered goals to defeat CSUN 2-1 on Sunday evening in Northridge, California.
- The win was the second on the road this season for the squad.
- Mather-Nash had five saves, while Fernandez stopped a penalty kick in the 86th minute to help secure the victory.
SCOUTING UNLV
- The Rebels are 4-2-2 with an RPI ranking of 49 heading into Saturday's matchup at GCU Stadium.
- UNLV had the most wins of any Mountain West team during nonconference action and is on a four-match unbeaten streak (2-0-2).
- Rebels goalkeeper Hugo Lemos ranks 15th in the nation with an .842 save percentage, totaling 32 saves in net in eight games. The Rebels have yet to give up more than one goal in a match and have two shutouts.
- A pair of UNLV players have three goals, one behind Camaño for the conference lead. Maxim Scordo has three goals and two assists to rank first in the league with eight points.
- GCU is outshooting UNLV 150-65 with a 64-30 shot-on-goal differential.
