AT A GLANCE
The second-longest active winning streak in the nation belongs to Grand Canyon, which heads to UNLV for a pivotal Friday night Mountain West matchup in Las Vegas.Â
The Lopes have won seven consecutive matches dating back to Sept. 20 and are 6-0 in conference play. GCU defeated the Rebels 2-1 in the first meeting on Sept. 26, the first Mountain West contest of the season. The winning streak is one behind Georgetown (eight) and is tied with Portland (seven).
GCU is coming off back-to-back 2-0 victories at home, with goalkeeper Beltran Fernandez earning MW Defender of the Week honors for his play in goal. The squad is 30th in the nation and first in the conference with a plus-11 goal differential, holding a 7-1 advantage over their last three matches.
Lopes captain Jorge Lopez is having a career season, scoring in each of his past three matches with a conference-best eight assists, fifth most in the nation. Lopez, a midfielder, has tallied a point in nine of 14 matches this season, including one in each of the Lopes' seven wins during the winning streak. The California native notched MW Offensive Player of the Week accolades on Monday.
The Lopes are 20th in the nation in assists per game, averaging 2.3 per contest. The 32 assists as a team ranks 18th nationally, while Lopez, João Goncalinho (six) and Bradley De Jesus (five) each have five or more.Â
GCU has totaled double-digit shots in every match this season, ranking seventh in the NCAAÂ at 17.4 per game. Its 7.8 shots on goal per match are fifth most in the country.
Three of the top point leaders square off Friday. Lopez is second in the MW with 16, while freshman Arnau Camaño has 15, both trailing Maxim Scordo of UNLV at 21.Â
The Lopes have not allowed two or more goals in a match since Sept. 12. They have yet to allow two or more goals in a single match in MW play.
A win for GCU would secure home-field advantage for the first semifinal on Nov. 10 in the MW Championship. GCU is hosting the Nov. 14 championship match regardless of which teams are in it.Â
A win also puts the Lopes in prime position for the regular-season title and ensuing No. 1Â seed. A victory Friday and a San José State loss Saturday night would give GCU at least a share of the regular-season crown.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lopes earned their second straight shutout victory Oct. 18 versus Utah Tech, extending their winning streak to seven matches.
Lopez scored for the third straight game, while midfielder Martin Luala had a career high two assists.
GCU led 4-3 in shots at the half before tripling their total in the second, finishing the match with a 16-8Â advantage in that category.
SCOUTING UNLV
The Rebels are 8-4-2 overall and 4-2 in MW play with a 4-0-1 home record. They hold second place in the MW standings with 12 points, six back from GCU.
UNLV won four straight since its 2-1 loss at GCU but recently fell to San José State on Oct. 18.
UNLV's defense allows less than one goal per game, ranking 17th in the country at .857. The two goals allowed to the Spartans was the first time since the Lopes' contest Sept. 26.
Maxim Scordo leads the conference in goals (nine) and points (21), ranking in the top 20 nationally in both categories.Â
Hugo Lemos' .793 save percentage is 23rd best nationally and leads the MW.Â
WHAT'S NEXT?Â
Two of the final three GCU matches are on the road, continuing Wednesday at San José  State. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on MW+.
