STOCKTON, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team kept its pace throughout the Visit Stockton Invitational, holding leads after the first and second rounds before doing the same Saturday to win the 16-team tournament with a three-day total of 22 under par.
The Lopes shot 4 under Saturday after coming into the final round at 18 under. That placed GCU six strokes ahead of second-place UC Irvine and Washington State and nine strokes ahead of fourth-place San Jose State and George Washington.
The tournament win is the third in two years for Lopes head coach
Mark Mueller and the program. It is GCU's fourth top-10 finish this season and third top-five placement.
Fifth-year senior
Parker Reddig, in his first season as a Lope, led GCU on Saturday with a 5-under 66 with all five of his birdies coming in the final 12 holes.
Lopes senior
Matthew Braley, who entered the final round in second place, finished tied for third with an even round Saturday to make him 9 under for the tournament. Braley sank three birdies on Saturday and played the par-3 holes at 5 under, a tournament best.
Sophomore teammate
Josh McCabe shot even par Saturday and tied for 30th at even par overall. GCU junior
Nicky Kling tied for 37th at 1 over while sophomore
Sam Murphy rounded out the group in a tie for 49th at 3 over.
The Lopes tallied 49 birdies for the tournament, including 14 on Saturday.
GCU concludes the fall season Oct. 31–Nov. 2 in the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, California. The Lopes will then begin spring competition on Feb. 16-18 in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawaii.
Day 2 recap
GCU maintained its rhythm from Thursday's first round of the Visit Stockton Invitational and remained in first place through 36 holes, carding a Friday second round of 7 under par to move to 18 under overall.
The Lopes are four strokes ahead of second-place UC Irvine, which jumped five spots after the second round. San Jose State (13 under), Fresno State (11 under) and Washington State (10 under) and George Washington (10 under) round out the top five entering Saturday's final round.
Braley remained in the top three after Friday's second round and jumped one spot from his Thursday finish, scoring a 4-under round with five birdies as he sits in second place. Reddig also ended his second round in the top 10, shooting 2 under with four birdies. Reddig is tied for seventh with six other players at 5 under.
Kling recorded a 1-under second round for GCU and is tied for 20th at 3 under for the tournament. McCabe is even through 36 holes after a 1-over round Friday while Murphy moved up eight spots and is 2 over par (tied for 52nd) after an even-par scorecard Friday.
The Lopes totaled 14 birdies Friday and have tallied 35 in two days. McCabe also recorded an eagle on the 14th hole in the second round.
The third and final round begins Saturday morning at the Stockton Country Club. GCU seeks its third win in the past two seasons after tying for first in the UCSB Collegiate Invitational in April 2021 and winning the GCU Invitational in March 2021.
Day 1 recap
GCU concluded the first round of the Visit Stockton Invitational in sole possession of first place on Thursday.
The Lopes carded a team score of 11 under par, giving them a one-stroke lead over second-place UC San Diego.
Of the 93-player field, four Lopes are in the top 30, including Braley in a third-place tie with a 5-under-par round of 66. Braley's day consisted of seven birdies, including three through his first five holes played. Not far behind him is Reddig, who is tied for eighth at 4 under (68). Reddig registered five birdies for his round.
Kling is tied for 16th at 2 under while McCabe is tied for 27th at 1 under, and Murphy is in a tie for 60th at 2 over. Thursday's round marked the best day of the season for the Lopes, who combined for 21 birdies.
GCU is one stroke above UC San Diego and two strokes higher than third-place Fresno State. Of the 16-team field, 11 teams finished under par after the first round.
The second round begins Friday morning with the third round concluding the tournament on Saturday morning.
