TUCSON, Ariz. — The Grand Canyon swimming and diving teams competed in their first dual meets of the season with the Lopes men and women falling to host Arizona on Saturday.
On the men's side, the Lopes picked up individual event wins from sophomore
Sam Jennings in the 200-yard backstroke (1 minute, 52.33 seconds) and freshman
Jonathan Rom in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.41) and 400-yard IM (4:15.48).
Lopes sophomore Fruzsina Macsok was an event winner in the 400-yard IM, clocking in with a 4:39.67.
Junior
Isaac Poole had an impressive mark in the 3-meter dive, recording a score of 299.03 that was GCU's No. 6 all-time mark.
Lopes freshman
Paula Martinez Moreno cracked the program's top-10 list with a 55.72 time in the 100-yard butterfly.
GCU picked up relay wins in the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle. The women's team of
Maria Brunlehner,
Maria Chatzi,
Kaitlyn Carr and
Emily Muteti posted a time of 1:35.40. On the men's side,
Omar Elsayd,
Alex Volkov, Atuhaire Ambala and
Vitaly Kostin swam a 1:24.64.
The men dropped the dual 204-90 and the women lost 219-76 in the second all-time meeting between the programs.
The Lopes turn their attention to their home opener next weekend, with Friday and Saturday action against Seattle U, Loyola Marymount and San Diego State scheduled at Fr Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center.
