LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team kicked off the fall season over the weekend with a strong showing at the Beach Tennis Tournament hosted by Long Beach State.
The Lopes collected 12 singles wins in the three-day event, with reigning WAC Player of the Year
Natasha Puehse taking home the title in the top flight singles draw. In doubles, Puehse and junior
Santa Strombacha won the consolation bracket in the top doubles flight.
Puehse, who finished with a team-high 11 singles wins last season at No. 1, looked sharp in her first fall appearance. The senior from Scottsdale, Arizona, won in straight sets over UC Irvine's Alyssia Fossorier before prevailing in 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 over CSU Northridge's Yuliia Zhytelna to advance to the semifinals. Puehse cruised to the finals with a 6-1, 6-4 win and battled in a three-hour match against CSUN's Sasha Turchak, eventually winning 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 to take home the flight title.
Up and down the lineup, the Lopes performed well with Strombacha, newcomer
Anali Kocevar and returner
Aline Buhr each winning two singles matches across three singles flights.
In doubles, Puehse and Strombacha picked up where they left off in the spring by winning the consolation bracket in the top singles flight. The top GCU doubles pair had a team-best 13-3 record in the spring. After dropping the first match this weekend, Puehse and Strombacha won two straight matches. The final win was a 7-5 decision over UC Irvine's Jenna Schlatter and Alyssa Fossorier.
