The Grand Canyon track and field teams will travel to Tucson for their last regular season meet on Saturday at the Desert Heat Classic.Â
"We are sending a much smaller group than we anticipated to the University of Arizona Desert Heat Classic for one final tune-up before our WAC Championship meet in two weeks," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said. "This meet will allow our athletes to improve on their performances and stay sharp but not overextended any of them before conference."
The meet will start with throws and jumps events at noon. The track events will begin at approximately 5:40 p.m.Â
On the women's side, the Lopes will send seniors
Alexa Hokanson and
Elizabeth Balsan, who broke school records at the previous meet. Hokanson will compete in the 800-meter race and Balsan will run in the mile and 5,000-meter races. These track athletes will be key performers at conference, in which they will use their last regular-season meet to refine skills.Â
GCU senior
Madelyn Lundberg will also perform in the pole vault on Saturday. Lundberg had a 4.15-meter jump at the Canyon Invitational, setting the school record on Senior Day. After coming off of an incredible mark, Lundberg will use the Desert Heat Classic to prepare for WAC Championships.Â
Also traveling to Tucson for competition is senior
Ethan Harris. Harris broke the school record in the high jump at 2.15 meters and was honored as WAC Field Athlete of the Week for his performance.Â
Junior
Jorden Okyere will compete in the discus, shot put and hammer throw on Saturday for chances to take down his school records. Okyere has broken school records five times this season, and looks to be an important asset going into conference.Â
The Lopes will also bring junior
Jacob Lewis, who broke the school record in the 800-meter run for the first time since 2016 at the previous meet. He was awarded WAC Track Athlete of the Week for that performance. Lewis will run in the 800- and 3,000-meter races.Â
"It is always special to begin and end our regular outdoor season in Tucson," Flood said.Â
