The Grand Canyon track and field teams will host their final home meet of the year on Saturday at the Canyon Invitational.Â
"We are thrilled to be hosting another home meet this Saturday," said head coach
Tom Flood. "This meet will again be another wonderful opportunity for our athletes to perform in front of family and friends."
The meet will take place on the GCU track and events will begin around 1:00 p.m. and conclude around 9:30 p.m.
Navigating through the season, the Lopes have set many milestones including hosting their first three meets. The upcoming meet will be the fourth and final meet of the season.
"This meet, like our meet in early April, will be a star studded affair with several Olympians and other elite track and field athletes in attendance," said Flood. "The men's 400-meters will be the featured race this weekend with the 2012 London Olympic gold medalist (Kirani James - Grenada) and silver medalist (Nijel Amos - Botswana), as well as the 2016 Rio Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400-meter relay (Arman Hall - U.S.A.) all competing."
The Lopes are no stranger to seeing Olympians use the GCU track as decorated track stars such as Allyson Felix, Sydney McLaughlin, and
Molly Huddle all have ran on the track. GCU looks forward to giving their student-athletes Olympic competition to look up to and race against at the upcoming meet.Â
Beginning at 6 p.m. GCU will be recognizing the Lopes' seniors on the east side of the track. The recognition will occur throughout the meet until about 8:15 p.m.Â
Senior
Jesse Newman threw over 70 meters in javelin at the Roadrunner Invitational for the first time in two years. Newman patiently looks to crumble his current school record at 71.57 meters.
Also coming off of an impressive performance is senior
Ethan Harris. Harris tied his school record at 2.14 meters at the Roadrunner Invitational. Previously this season at the first-ever home meet, Harris set the school record.
"We are finally getting down to the last couple weeks of the season and the athletes performances will help us in determining our always competitive WAC outdoor championship teams," said Flood.Â
