The Grand Canyon track and field teams will compete at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio for a three-day meet that begins Thursday.
"We are thrilled at the chance to go chase some brisk Texas winds in a wonderful track and field facility at UTSA," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said. "It will give our student-athletes a chance to compete against some of the top athletes in the country. This meet will preview the hot Texas weather we will see in mid-May at the WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at UTRGV."
The meet will begin with the heptathlon and decathlon events on Thursday and Friday. Throws and distance events will start Friday, and the rest of the events will take place on the final day of competition, Saturday.
The Lopes will see strong competition as they face Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, UT San Antonio, Rice, Texas, UT Rio Grande Valley, UTEP, Akron, and Incarnate Word.
At the previous multi-event meet, senior
Niki Xydona set a GCU school record in the heptathlon with a score of 5,073 points. Xydona is predicted to continue to be a fierce competitor going into the Roadrunner Invitational.
Another multi-athlete that proved himself in the track and field events at the Aztec Invitational was redshirt sophomore
Aidan Diggs. Winning the competition, Diggs scored 6,716 points. It was the first time he competed in the decathlon as a Lope.
"I'm excited for another chance to see both
Niki Xydona and
Aidan Diggs compete in another full heptathlon and decathlon on Thursday and Friday, and for the rest of our athletes to achieve personal bests in their respective events," Flood said.
GCU sophomore
Jan Kral looks to advance his top 400-meter time in the WAC at 47.53 seconds. He also strives to improve his 100- and 200-meter times that rank within the top three in the WAC this season.
After being 1 centimeter short of the pole vault school record at the previous meet, senior
Madelyn Lundberg will get another shot to set the GCU school record.
GCU senior
Ethan Harris is coming off a win in the high jump from the GCU Antelope Invitational with a 2.12-meter jump. Harris previously set the GCU school record in the first meet of the season with a 2.14-meter jump.
